A ferry carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew members sank in the southern Philippines on Monday after capsizing en route from Zamboanga City on the island of Mindanao to Jolo island, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has said.

At least eight people were initially confirmed dead, according to Arsina Kahing-Nanoh, the mayor of Hadji Muhtamad municipality, where the incident occurred.

PCG Commander Romel Dua of Southern Mindanao District later told Reuters that 15 had died, 316 had been rescued and 28 remain missing.

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident, and military aircraft and vessels have been deployed to assist in the rescue effort, Dua added.

Video from the scene shows multiple passengers floating in the water while clinging to emergency rafts, some of them wearing life vests.
